DINODRIFTERS Dev Diary #3: Battle System

Hello and welcome to another DINODRIFTERS dev diary!

An important part of the ancient world is the battle between predator and prey, so today I'd like to talk about the way that animals fight, including the player.

To start a battle, click on your target and press the HUNT button (for carnivores and omnivores) or the ATTACK button (for herbivores)

After clicking on the animal you want to fight and selecting the appropriate drop down menu button, you begin a battle with that animal.

Introducing Haplocanthosaurus! One of the little-bittle sauropods of the Morrison Formation!

Battle in DINODRIFTERS is in real-time. The opposing animal will attack, move and flee on their own speed. So, you must act fast and use the buttons on the control bar to incapacitate them.

ATTACK performs a short attack, STRIKE performs a longer, more damaging attack and RUN AWAY attempts to flee from the engagement. All of these actions share the same cooldown timer, so you must analyse the situation so you minimise the time in which you are open to attack from the enemy.

In Story Mode, another option, CARDS, will appear that allows you to use various special moves that perform special non-lethal actions (like tranquilising). I shall talk about this in another diary.

In Dinosaur Mode, victory means that the opposing animal is killed and if small enough, eaten, else it will leave behind a corpse

Once one of the parties has their health reduced to zero, the battle ends. The entire battle takes one turn to perform, so after it is over (and you're not dead), then a standard turn will be over.

However, animals themselves can start a battle with you too! If a predator for example, is hunting and they feel they can take you down, then they will chase you and if they are faster than you, lock you in position and force-start a battle with you.

Next diary, I shall give an talk about artificial intelligence in DINODRIFTERS!

Until next time!
